Guanghua Cambridge International School (GHCIS) admits students who have completed their core and foundation years in the Chinese local system and are determined to gain places in leading universities overseas. Due to differences in university admission criteria and procedures, no matter how intelligent a Chinese high school graduate is, s/he will face great difficulties when seeking entrance to a leading Western university.

The main underlying reasons for these difficulties that Chinese students experience include absence of prerequisite learning experiences, inadequate exposure to English speaking settings compared with their peers worldwide, and lack of critical thinking skills and personal qualities beyond the classroom. Therefore, one of the vital objectives of Guanghua Cambridge International School is to provide an internationally- recognized curriculum and to develop those essential study and social skills sought by first class Western universities, as well as to prepare Chinese high school leavers to better fit into a culturally diversified university.

An important mission of ours is to provide our Chinese local students with a smooth transition from an intensely focused national curriculum to a broadly challenging Western education system. As a result, flexibility and individually- tailored pathways are highly necessary. To meet that necessity, we have designed three main programmes:

A two-year intensive A-Level programme (AS and A2)

•  A three-year programme including a preparatory year followed by two years of A-Level studies (PRE, AS and A2)

Students may choose the programme which best fits their individual education plans, based on their subject knowledge and English fluency level upon admission.

PRE Year

In the preparatory year, most subjects are taught following IGCSE syllabuses with the exception of Mathematics and English. Mathematics follows the AS-Level syllabus. The English course adopts resources from First Certificate in English (FCE) of Cambridge English Language Assessments (CELA), and aims to prepare students for further studies as well as to meet the language proficiency requirements set by overseas universities (e.g. IELTS).

AS & A2 Years

The AS and A2 years are a typical two-year programme prior to tertiary education in the British education system. All subjects other than English are optional and students may choose 3-4 depending on their interests and strengths. Almost all subjects are taught following AS / A2 syllabuses in the respective year. As our students normally finish their AS-Level Mathematics in advance, they could complete their A2-Level Mathematics in the AS year, thus having the opportunity to continue taking the course of Further Mathematics in year A2. English courses continue to be based on First Certificate in English (FCE) and Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) of Cambridge English Language Assessments (CELA), combined with some test preparation elements (e.g. IELTS).
